NEWER MEMBERS READ ON

Regional Gatherings (RGs) are weekend-long parties held by Mensa chapters all over the country. They're generally held at nice hotels and feature a variety of activities.

Our upcoming regional gathering is called MATRIX 2--"Piratical Sabbatical" It will be held April 30-May 2, 2010.

Our RG will have a hospitality suite open 24 hours a day. This is sort of your home base for the gathering. People socialize in the hospitality suite all day and all night. Just as the last stragglers are going to bed (as dawn is about to break), a new contingent of early risers are coming in for their morning coffee and sweet roll.

Our hospitality suite is well-stocked with soft drinks, beer, wine, coffee, tea, and filtered water. You can go there any time, day or night, and find something tasty to eat. Generally there are lots of snack foods and sweets but there are also veggies, sandwich fixings, peanut butter and jelly, and other comfort foods.

You can spend your entire day in hospitality socializing, meeting new friends, or you can venture out and attend some of our lectures and interactive activities. We'll be offering more than thirty talks and activities at this year's RG. Talks are sometimes light, sometimes serious, sometimes conducted by Mensans, sometimes by special guests. There's always something new to experience at our RG programs!

Do you enjoy games?--trivia games, board games, poker, bridge, Scrabble, chess? Our RG will feature a 'round-the-clock game room too. I've often found myself playing Trivial Pursuit or Apples to Apples in RG game rooms at 2:00 or 3:00 AM.

For the past several years, our RG has held a giant banquet on Saturday night. The good news is that you don't have to dress up for the banquet--but many people like to anyway. Some people even come in costume.

As the banquet winds down, we feature a keynote speaker or presenter. This is the premiere presentation of the RG! And, over the past few years, we've proven that keynote presentations don't have to be stuffy. They can be lots of fun. Our last presenters received a standing ovation--so I think it's safe to say that a lot of people liked them.

We like to utilize the resources of the RG hotel. The Holiday Inn Gaithersburg has a gorgeous indoor swimming pool and hot tub area with lots of palm trees and tropical plants. We've arranged for two pool parties for our RG guests.

Keynote Speaker

2008

At our 2008 RG, our keynote presenter was Dr. Harry Ringermacher -- a physicist and cosmologist -- who spoke about the origin and fate of the Universe.

2009

At our 2009 RG, our keynote presenters were Frank Conlon (concert pianist) and Brian Quentin Thorne (pop vocalist). They spoke about the life and times of American composer George Gershwin and performed several of his masterpieces, including "Rhapsody in Blue."

2010?

We want someone new (i.e., someone who has never appeared at a Mensa gathering before), someone who is a master at his or her craft, and someone who totally engages with the audience. Over the next few months, we'll be giving clues to who this mystery guest might be.
